It's likely your USB port(s) is/are working quirkishly. That's not to say that a perfectly recent BIOS combined with USB 1.1 is free of problems! In the Pocket PC ActiveSync client, go to the "Schedule" tab and make sure "When synchronizing remotely with my PC, disconnect when complete" is unchecked.
